Frequently Asked Questions About BluWood
What is BluWood?
Part I - The Infusion Process
This technology forms a water-repellent, semi-vapor permeable coating that interlocks with the wood fibers to provide controlled topical and subsurface moisture absorption. The key to mold control is MOISTURE CONTROL. BluWood components limit uncontrolled moisture absorption. The Infusion Process is specifically formulated to resist mold fungus growth on the surface of the cured coating.
Part II - The Perfect Barrier DOT Wood Preservative
A proven fungicide and insecticide that provides protection from rot, fungi and wood ingesting insects, including Formosan termites.

Where is BluWood used?
BluWood can be used for:
- Entire wood frame structure of homes including all panels and engineered wood products
- Decking, fencing and other outdoor projects
- Fascia, window and door stock, molding, wood flooring
- Siding, shakes and shingles
- Furniture
BluWood is also used as a primer/wood conditioner for interior and exterior applications.

What separates BluWood from other building systems?
Controlling moisture absorption is the most effective method of preventing mold growth.
Closely monitored application takes place in a licensed factory to ensure complete and consistent coverage that doesn't interfere with building construction. This high level of quality assurance is difficult to achieve with other mold preventive products, only available as a job site application.

Can BluWood be used in exterior applications?
Yes. BluWood can be used for decking, fencing and other outdoor projects. It is an excellent primer, even for waterborne preservative treated wood, and will accept most exterior finish systems. BluWood will continue to provide these unique features and complement topcoat products.

How long does BluWood last?
BluWood is supported by a Limited Lifetime Warranty, transferrable to qualified successors with a 10-Year warranty, and can be transferred an unlimited number of times for 30 years.
Top
How long does it take for BluWood to be effective?
The reaction with wood is immediate. Once the coating is cured, all components can be exposed to the weather.
Top
Can BluWood be applied to pressure treated wood?
Yes. BluWood that is applied to waterborne preservative treated wood, will provide the same benefits of protection with no adverse effects.
Top
Does this system have any effect on the structural properties of wood?
No. There are no adverse changes in the structural properties of wood when coated with BluWood.
Top
Will the moisture controlling properties of BluWood have any effect on splitting, checking, warp, bow and other "natural" wood properties?
Yes. The water repellent property of BluWood greatly reduces the intake of moisture. The vapor permeable quality slows the moisture vapor transfer from the environment AND from within wood.
Builders often experience more "usable" wood on the job site, especially after the framing package has been delivered to the job site and been exposed to rainfall or high moisture. Conditioning building components with BluWood reduces unusable lumber left over on the job site, reducing lumber waste factors by as much as 25% to 50% on extended projects where wood framing is exposed to the weather for longer periods of time.
Top
Are there any other job site benefits of the moisture controlling properties of BluWood with wood framing materials?
Yes. By controlling the water AND moisture absorption into the surface, changes in weather can be less of a delay during the framing stages of construction.
Multi-family builders have reported fewer delays in construction due to the ability to work in high moisture and even light rain conditions. Using BluWood coated building components allows a contractor to continue after such events without the concern of trapping moisture within structural components that can lead to mold growth.
Top
Will BluWood have any negative impact on truss plates, hangers and connectors?
No. Industry recognized third party testing was performed for corrosion on metal plates used for structural components.
Results confirmed that this protective coating is non-reactive, and within 2% of the results of untreated wood. In addition, major truss plate manufacturers have performed lateral resistance tests and similarly concluded that BluWood treated lumber has no adverse effects when used with plates, hangers or connectors.
Top
Is BluWood effective when used with lumber that has moisture content above 19%?
Yes. BluWood forms a vapor-permeable coating within the cellular fiber structure of wood.
This conditioning affect helps control season checks, splits, cracks and excessive brittleness by allowing more controlled and consistent seasoning. Our process is equally effective on unseasoned, green lumber, as well as kiln-dried or air-dried lumber.

Do job site end-cuts, electrical and mechanical cut-outs need to be treated?
Exposed end-cuts and cut-outs are recommended to be coated on the job with BluWood End-Cut and Cut-Out Solution, especially if exposed to Formosan termites.
Top
Does BluWood replace code required termite treatment programs (Primary Termite Treatment)?
No. Compliance with local code requirements for approved termite protection provided by a professional Pest Control Operator is still required. However, our warranty will be in effect, once the primary termite warranty claim provision is exhausted.
Top
What are the environmental, toxicological or regulatory concerns with the handling or disposal of BluWood building components?
- BluWood can be recycled
- has the same disposal requirements as non-treated wood
- has virtually no VOC's (Volatile Organic Compounds)
- can be released into the environment
- is non-hazardous, non-polluting and non-carcinogenic
- BluWood contributes no additional gassing or odor to wood

What does the warranty cover?
In the highly unlikely event of a failure, the Limited Lifetime Warranty covers the actual cost of remedial repair; replacement, repair or re-installation of BluWood coated products.
The affected area will then be re-certified. The Limited Lifetime Warranty to the initial building owner is transferrable to qualified successors for 10 years, and can be transferred an unlimited number of times within 30 years of initial warranty registration.
